UK Tatts Dec Mares Day-2: $2.145m Diary
In the UK overnight, Tweenhills Stud's David Redvers (standing alongside client Sheikh Fahad al Thani from Qatar) out-bid Australian Paul Makin & bloodstock agent Hugo Merry to pay top price of 1.3 million guineas (A$2.145m) for 11-year-old mare Diary (Green Desert-Darrery, by Darshaan) during the 2nd session at the 4-day Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Diary (consigned from The Castlebridge Consignment) is the dam of both French Gr1-winner Total Gallery & UK Gr1 runner-up Lady Darshaan & was sold in-foal to this season's European leading stallion & Gr1 English Derby-winning former Coolmore shuttler Galileo. Redvers commented: "She has been bought for Pearl Bloodstock. She could go to any stallion that we want, but we would like to send her to Dubawi (triple Gr1-winning Darley shuttler) & try to replicate the mating that produced Makfi (this season's dual European Gr1-winning 3YO colt & currently 2nd top-rated horse on the latest world rankings from the International Federation Of Horseracing Authorities). Of course, we might not get in to Dubawi, but you would think Darley would be thrilled to get a mare of such quality for him. She will come back to Tweenhills now & I will have sleepless nights looking after her! Sheikh Fahad is thrilled to be buying the very best of bloodstock, both stallions & broodmares, and it is a fantastic time to invest in horses. We valued her to within 100,000 guineas (A$165,000) of her sales price. This mare really has got it all. Her stock will be bred to race & sell - all sorts." The sale proved a triumph for Dairy's owners, who had purchased her for just 11,000 guineas (A$18,200) at the 2005 Tattersalls February Sale.
