Accuser Changes Evidence In Qld Jockey Betting Inquiry
Racing Queensland stewards adjourned their inquiry into Gold Coast jockey Daniel Griffin's alleged betting after his accuser & fellow jockey Jana Piper changed her evidence yesterday. Apprentice Piper previously told stewards on September 10 that Griffin had placed bets or asked her to bet on his behalf via a TAB account Piper operated while the pair shared a residence. Stewards subsequently confiscated Griffin's computer on September 28 for forensic examination, which revealed "numerous bets" under the name Jana Piper (who was a licensed stable-hand at the time). Yesterday Piper withdrew her accusations against Griffin, explaining a "personal grievance" against Griffin had triggered her initial allegations. Piper also she had placed the bets on the TAB account prior to becoming an apprentice jockey, but had not placed a bet for Griffin. Stewards duly adjourned the inquiry & ordered both Piper & Griffin to provide personal phone & bank records for the period the bets were made.
