Racing Vic Wants Control Over Commission Agents & Vets

Wednesday, 8th December 2010

Racing Victoria "may seek a change in legislation so commission agents, veterinarians & others in the industry come under the jurisdiction of its stewards," reported The Herald-Sun. Widening the "policing range of stewards was one of a handful of key issues discussed at yesterday's 2nd & final day of the national stewards' conference in Launceston". In the recent Danny Nikolic betting inquiry, commission agent Neville Clements refused a stewards' order to hand over his mobile phone "amid debate whether stewards had jurisdiction over him"; Clements was warned-off for life for his refusal, "but gained a reversal on appeal at Victorian Civil & Administrative Tribunal". RV chief steward Terry Bailey said a change of legislation "would make dealing with such issues more clear-cut". Stewards have "also long been keen to make vets more accountable in cases of positive swabs".
