Duffy "Certain To Be Re-Elected" Racing Vic Chairman

Thursday, 9th December 2010

Victoria's new Minister For Racing Denis Napthine "will discover the power of an independent board when Racing Victoria chairman Michael Duffy is voted back into the top job" this afternoon, declared The Herald-Sun. Napthine commented before the recent state government election that Duffy had "reached his use-by date" & suggested RV "move on from the past". Napthine warned bluntly: "I hope Racing Victoria is mature enough to understand there is a change of government, a change of minister & I want a positive working relationship with Racing Victoria. I would hope Racing Victoria is part of that new process." However the newspaper commented this morning: "He will be confronted with the realisation that the independent body is just that - independent - and will not be dictated to by the new minister." It quoted "one senior racing man" observing: "It would be like the new finance minister telling the boss of the Reserve Bank to step aside. It is just not within his authority." The newspaper added: "Duffy clearly has the numbers to win today's vote for another term as chairman & is likely to be unopposed."
