Major Remedial Work On Benalla Track
Racing Victoria & the Benalla Racing Club announced plans for "extensive remedial work" on the Benalla turf track, which has been closed for racing & training since October 22 when a small section of the track collapsed during the running of the opening race. An extensive review determined the drainage system was at fault, "eroding the ground above & weakening the racing surface". As a result, the entire drainage system between the 900m & 300m mark will be replaced, "with that stretch of the track to be excavated & a new racing surface installed". The project (to be jointly funded by RV, BRC & Country Racing Victoria) "will see the track closed for racing & training until March 2011, with programmed race meetings to be transferred". Meetings set for January 11 & 30, plus February 21, have been transferred to Wodonga; the meeting on March 6 has been moved to Wangaratta. Meanwhile local trainers "have been utilising the sand track without interruption since the turf track's closure & will permitted to do so throughout this period".
