Griffin Cleared But Piper Charged Over Jockey Bets

Friday, 10th December 2010

Queensland Racing stewards have cleared jockey Daniel Griffin of betting offences, but laid 3 charges against his accuser Lara Piper. Stewards originally investigated bets placed from a TAB account after apprentice jockey Piper alleged Griffin placed bets himself or asked her to make the wagers on Queensland races. Stewards impounded a computer from Griffin's home for testing, before Piper changed her evidence last week, admitting she made the allegations because of "a personal grievance" with Griffin. After examining the pair's phone & banking records, stewards cleared Griffin, but charged Piper with giving misleading evidence to stewards & conduct prejudicial to the interests or welfare of racing.
