Singleton Slams "18th Century Race Club Mentality"

Friday, 10th December 2010

Asked about the major issues facing racing, John Singleton told The Daily Telegraph: "Our racing is the best I've seen anywhere in the world, but the sport is living in antiquity. Here we have the race club mentality of the 18th century trying to compete for the gambling dollar in the 21st century. It's not going to work & eventually there is only one way for the sport to go & that is south." Singleton said the merger of the Australian Jockey Club & Sydney Turf Club "is a step in the right direction" & declared: "I think more race club mergers are inevitable. Gone are the days when it was all clubs & you get a ribbon for racing one day a week. There are too many race clubs. It's crazy."
