Ownership Negotiations For Toowoomba Turf Club
Toowoomba Turf Club chairman Bob Frappell yesterday declared "the best interests of all stakeholders will be uppermost in any consideration of an asset-sharing arrangement with Racing Queensland". It followed RQ's announcement of "its intention to renew negotiations with the TTC to acquire a share of ownership of Clifford Park". Frappell said RQ's initial offer "fell short of sufficient seed funding & subsequently was rejected by the TTC Committee". Frappell noted: "It is my view that the Committee are the custodians of Clifford Park for the members, the racing fraternity & the community in general & any decision made in regards to sharing the asset with Racing Queensland will be made with their best interests in mind. Ultimately it will be up to the members to decide, but the original offer was well short of expectations." The TTC gained freehold ownership of Clifford Park in the late 1990s under a Queensland Government policy review (which saw a number of other race clubs throughout the state become similar beneficiaries). For the previous 120 years, the Club enjoyed a "peppercorn lease" of the property from the Trustees Of Toowoomba Racecourse, under a Deed Of Trust administered by the Queensland Lands Department.
