UK Gr1-Winner Septimus Dies After Gelding Operation
In Europe, Gr1-winning 7YO stayer Septimus (Sadler's Wells-Caladira, by Darshaan) who won the 2008 Gr1 Irish St Leger (14 furlongs) by 13-lengths "has died due to complications following a gelding operation" reported racingpost.com. Septimus stood his 1st season this year at Castle Hyde Stud (under the Coolmore jumps banner) "but was pulled from stud duty when only 3 of the 21 mares he covered were tested in-foal". On the track Septimus also won 2008's Irish Gr3 Curragh Cup (14 furlongs); & he finished 2007 as the top-rated stayer in Europe on the International Classifications (at 122) after blitzing his rivals by 5-lengths (& earning the highest Racing Post Rating registered by any stayer that year at 125) when setting a new track record in the UK Gr2 Doncaster Cup (18 furlongs), as well as winning both the UK Gr2 Lonsdale Stakes (2 miles) & UK Gr3 Mooresbridge Stakes, plus finishing runner-up in the UK Gr1 Coronation Cup (12 furlongs). In 2006 Septimus also won the UK Gr2 Dante Stakes by 8-lengths & in 2005 he won Ireland's Gr2 Beresford Stakes & finished 3rd in the UK Gr1 Racing Post Trophy.
