5 Sydney Jockeys Found With "Cheater Vests"
Five Sydney jockeys "have been found to be using 'cheater vests' following a crackdown by Racing NSW stewards after a tip-off from counterparts in Hong Kong" reported The Daily Telegraph. Leading rider Hugh Bowman was the 1st to be charged & was yesterday fined $500 for using the vest "which had a layer of protective padding removed". The remaining 4 jockeys "have been summoned to attend an inquiry at a later date". Chief steward Ray Murrihy confirmed "a tip-off from counterparts in Hong Kong led to the sweep of the jockeys' room" noting: "Steve Railton (HKJC steward) informed us there were a number of vests doing the rounds in HK that didn't meet the standards & it appears they are also being used here. It seems the jockeys are using the modified vests for comfort rather than the difference in weight, which would hardly register. It (weight difference) would be little more than a 100g. We have found that instead of having 2 layers of protective padding, there is only one. It seems quite foolish to be using these vests for 2 reasons. The 1st is that they don't provide the protection they should & the 2nd is that insurance could be compromised." Murrihy "has informed stewards to be on the lookout for the vests across NSW, while Victorian & Queensland stewards have also been alerted". Murrihy summed up: "News spreads pretty quickly, so I could imagine there might be a few of the vests found in bins."
