Friday, 17th December 2010

In the US, trainer Scott Lake "made history, becoming the 6th trainer in North American racing to win 5,000 races", when Communicator led all-the-way to score at Laurel Park in Maryland, reported bloodhorse.com. Only Dale Baird (9,445), Jack Van Berg (6,405), King Leatherbury (6,313), Jerry Hollendorfer (5,830) & Steve Asmussen (5,684) have recorded more US victories. Lake, 45, won his 1st race at Penn National in June 1987; he has subsequently topped the Maryland (Laurel Park & Pimlico) standings in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009 & will be 2nd in 2010. From 2000-2009, Lake finished 1st or 2nd nationally in wins each year (leading in 2000, 2001, 2003 & 2006). He ranks 9th this year with 191 winners "after down-sizing his barn from 287 horses at 8 different tracks to 70 runners at 2 locations". Overall Lake's 22,236 starters have earned more than US$92.5 million prize-money.
