EXCLUSIVE 3: Australian US$10.8m Raid On Keeneland Mares

Friday, 17th December 2010

Australian buyers spent US$10.798 million at the recent Keeneland Broodmare Sale. In the latest issue of Breeding&Racing Magazine (out next week) staff researcher Belinda Howard spoke to many of the antipodean raiders - including Vin Cox, Wayne Bedggood, Jon Freyer, James Bester, John Kenneally, Steve Young, Henry Field, Peter Beer, Brett Howard & Steve Brem - to explain the reasoning behind their purchases. As Cox commented: "American mares play a large part in Australian racing & it is only getting bigger. Some 2.7% of Australian Stud Book mares are from the US & from this, 8-10% of stakes-winners (this past year) have been from US mares; even more impressive is that US mares produced 10-16% of Gr1-winners this year."
