MRC Faces Rejection For Bigger Caulfield Cup Field

Friday, 21st January 2011

The Melbourne Racing Club's “dismal record of rejected major projects looks set to continue, with the club's planned 20-horse field for the Caulfield Cup poised to be scrapped just months after being recommended by the MRC,” reported The Age. The newspaper declared: “The club has failed in a number of major projects over the past 14 months, with the 20-horse field for Australia's 2nd most important handicap set to be given the thumbs down.” The club had hoped to increase the field from 18 to 20 “but industry sources maintained the continued amount of severe interference at the 1st turn at Caulfield would make the scheme impractical”.
