Switch Wins US Gr1 Santa Monica Stakes

Tuesday, 1st February 2011

In the US, top 4YO mare Switch (Quiet American-Antoniette, by Nicholas) notched her 2nd successive Gr1 triumph in a month with another dominant victory in the US$250,000 Gr1 Santa Monica Stakes (7 furlongs) for mares 4YO & up at Santa Anita Park in California. At her previous start in late December, Switch blitzed her rivals by 4-lengths in stakes-record time in the Gr1 La Brea Stakes (7 furlongs) at Santa Anita. This time hot favourite & top-weighted Switch (again ridden by Joel Rosario for trainer John Sadler) “looked like a world-beater as she trounced her rivals by about 5-lengths” declared bloodhorse.com, cruising home ahead of 5YO mare Gilded Gem (Smarty Jones-Golden Jewel Box, by Slew o' Gold) & 6YO mare Sweet August Moon (Malibu Moon-Silent Academy, by Royal Academy). Switch (a US$150,000 yearling at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale) took her record to 5 wins (also including 2010's Gr2 Hollywood Oaks over 8.5 furlongs at Hollywood Park & Listed Torrey Pines Stakes over 8 furlongs at Del Mar) & 5 placings (in 2010's Gr1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint over 6 furlongs at Churchill Downs, Gr1 Lady's Secret Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Hollywood Park, Gr1 Las Virgenes Stakes over 8 furlongs at Santa Anita, Gr2 Santa Ynez Stakes over 7 furlongs at Santa Anita & Gr3 Railbird Stakes over 7 furlongs at Hollywood Park) from 12 starts for US$782,600 earnings. Vin Cox Bloodstock purchased Switch's half-sister Keystone Gulch (Gulch-Antoniette, by Nicholas) for US$180,000 at the 2007 Keeneland November sale. She is currently in foal to Exceed and Excel and has produced a weanling by Stratum.
