NSW Election 3: Hunter Valley Mining

Friday, 4th February 2011

The Daily Telegraph asked Racing Minister Kevin Greene & Opposition racing spokesman George Souris: Will there be a moratorium on further mining in the Hunter Valley thoroughbred breeding region?

  • Greene: Obviously I support the breeding industry, but mining does not fall under my portfolio.
  • Souris: The Coalition is soon to release its land-use policy. It will be one which introduces a new era of environmental considerations to the pre-exploration licence & the development application assessment process in a way that will protect areas engaged in high-value economic contribution, tourism, in prime agricultural land or in immediate close proximity to urban areas. As well the policy will include a consideration at both of these stages of expected cumulative impacts of mining & gas exploitation. The thoroughbred breeding region of the Upper Hunter is one such area & one such industry that demonstrates these attributes.
