Shamardal "Full Recovery" From Surgery After Fall

Friday, 4th February 2011

European champion 4-time Gr1-winning Darley shuttler Shamardal (Giant's Causeway-Helsinki, by Machiavellian) "has made a full recovery from exploratory surgery & will begin covering mares at Ireland's Kildangan Stud at the start of the European breeding season" reported racingpost.com. Shamardal "underwent surgery in December to investigate a fall" while standing the southern-hemisphere season at Darley's Kelvinside base in Australia. Darley's director of stallions Sam Bullard confirmed: "Shamardal arrived back at Kildangan last Thursday & is in good shape & available for viewing. He wasn't sound after his fall, but he was operated on & nothing untoward was found. He was flushed out & cleaned up & given routine antibiotics & he is now 100% sound." Shamardal "has made an outstanding start to his stud career" having sired 4 individual Gr1 winners, including last season's French Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains & Gr1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Lope De Vega, plus UK Gr1 Racing Post Trophy winner Casamento. Shamardal is standing the 2001 northern hemisphere season for €50,000 (A$65,000) & Bullard noted his book at Kildangan was "full by last September" & includes star members of Sheikh Mohammed's broodmare band Kazzia, Saoirse Abu & Satwa Queen, plus Wedding Gift (dam of Casamento).
