Racing Vic Appoints Equine Welfare Officer

Racing Victoria also announced it has "increased its commitment to horse welfare" with the appointment of Cara Shelley as full-time Equine Welfare Officer. The newly created position "will include the implementation & coordination of RV's equine welfare program, including initiatives for the care, retraining & re-homing of former thoroughbred racehorses". The Equine Welfare Officer "will also be responsible for liaising with industry stakeholders on equine welfare & the management of data on injuries, retirements & stable departures in developing further welfare programs". RV Chief Strategy Officer Paul Bittar emphasised: "The horses are the centrepiece of our industry & we are committed to ensuring they are afforded the appropriate care & attention both during & after their racing life."
