Dubai World Cup Star Well Armed Retired

Friday, 11th February 2011

WinStar Farm's multiple Gr1-winning home-bred 8YO gelding Well Armed (Tiznow-Well Dressed, by Notebook) "best known for his record-breaking 14-length victory in the 2009 Gr1 Dubai World Cup, has been retired from racing" reported bloodhorse.com. Well Armed "had been attempting a comeback with West Coast trainer Eoin Harty, but came up with a small filling in a tendon following a half-mile workout last month at Hollywood Park". Well Armed's margin in the World Cup "remains a record" & the well-beaten runner-up Gloria de Campeao duly "captured the race in 2010". Overall Well Armed (who also finished 3rd in the 2008 Dubai World Cup behind US Horse-Of-The-Year Curlin) recorded 7 wins (also including the US Gr1 Goodwood Stakes, Gr2 San Antonio Handicap & Gr2 San Diego Handicap setting a track record) & 5 placings (including the US Gr1 Pacific Classic Stakes, Gr2 San Antonio Handicap & Gr2 San Pasqual Handicap) from 24 starts for US$5,179,803 million earnings.
