Racing NSW "Studying" More Sydney Sunday Racing

Friday, 11th February 2011

Racing NSW "is studying the success of Sunday racing in the Sydney metropolitan area, particularly to avoid clashes with major racing carnivals interstate" reported The Daily Telegraph. Some of Sydney's leading jockeys confirmed "they would support more Sunday racing if it enabled them to ride at Melbourne's major race days". Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys also "conceded there were credible arguments for more Sunday racing in Sydney" adding: "Our objective is to increase field sizes, so everything & anything is on the table. For example, during the Melbourne Spring carnivals, all our top trainers & jockeys are in Melbourne, so maybe there is an opportunity to race in Sydney on a Sunday rather than clash with the Cox Plate or Derby Day at Flemington. We could race at the provincials on a Saturday & then in Sydney on a Sunday when those big meetings are on interstate. This way we get the best jockeys & trainers competing at our premier Sydney race meetings each week. We have to approach these things with an open mind. If you don't change, you perish."
