Broodmare Numbers Also Fall In Britain & Ireland

Weatherbys also reported the number of broodmares has similarly fallen in both Britain & Ireland:

  • The number of active broodmares in Ireland fell to 15,345 last year (from 20,700 in 2007 to 20,038 in 2008 and 18,851 in 2009). And new registrations in Ireland (fillies entering the breeding population) fell to just 1,365 last year (from 2,722 in 2007 to 2,248 in 2008 & 1,720 in 2009).
  • The number of broodmares active in Britain slipped to 9,826 last year (from 11,091 in 2007 to 10,740 in 2008 & 10,624 in 2009). And new broodmare registrations in Britain fell to 1,266 in 2010 (from 1,748 in 2007 to 1,351 in 2008 & 1,432 in 2009).
