13 Noms For 1st Leg Of Global Sprint Challenge
Australia's undefeated 4YO mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit-Helsinge, by Desert Sun) who was rated the world's best sprinter in the 2010 World Thoroughbred Rankings heads the list of 13 nominations taken yesterday for the opening leg of the 2011 Global Sprint Challenge, this Saturday's $750,000 Gr1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington in Melbourne. The US$10.8 million Global Sprint Challenge (the world's richest sprint race series) involves 9 races in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom & Singapore. The 1st of 2 Australian legs is the Gr1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes, in which the Peter Moody-trained Black Caviar will be favourite to stretch her unbeaten streak to 9. This is her 1st appearance since winning the 7th leg of the 2010 Global Sprint Challenge, the Gr1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington last November. Other prominent nominations for Saturday's race include Hay List (12 wins from 15 starts), King Pulse, 2010 Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily & Hinchinbrook.
