Black Caviar Chasing "Oldest Record In Aust Racing"

Tuesday, 15th February 2011

Meanwhile the world's highest-rated sprinter Black Caviar "can equal the oldest record in Australian racing history if she wins the $750,000 Gr1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday" noted The Daily Telegraph. Black Caviar has won her initial 8 race starts & if she wins the Lightning Stakes, she "will equal a record set by Grand Flaneur 131 years ago". Grand Flaneur (the 1880 Melbourne Cup winner) was retired undefeated after 9 starts, the "longest winning sequence on predominantly city tracks to start a race career by an Australian-trained galloper". Grand Flaneur's benchmark "has been equalled 3 times since but never bettered": Mollison (a contemporary of Phar Lap) won his initial 9 starts before being defeated, as did Queensland's top filly of the mid-1960s Eye Liner & brilliant Victorian 2YO Rancher 30 years ago. In recent years Sunline, Primrose Sands & Bentley Biscuit won their initial 8 races "but were beaten when attempting to equal Grand Flaneur's record".
