Randwick Revamp Won't Affect 2011 Spring Carnival

Friday, 18th February 2011

Royal Randwick's $150 million makeover "won't force the Epsom Handicap meeting to be transferred to another racetrack this Spring" reported The Daily Telegraph. Australian Turf Club chief executive Darren Pearce said the Randwick renovations "would be conducted in stages, but there should be no impact on the Autumn & Spring carnivals". Pearce explained: "The club is still looking at ways on how best to rebuild Randwick, but the probable scenario is no loss of carnivals in this calendar year. There will be some interim construction after July, then major construction on the track will commence after the Melbourne Cup Day meeting in November." However the newspaper noted that the  2012 Autumn & Spring feature race program "may need to be held at another venue than Randwick when the new grandstands are being built" & Pearce confirmed: "That is a possibility rather than a probability. The board will look at the big picture like what happens to our racing program & how that overlays with the construction program."
