Moonee Valley Chases Overseas Stars For Cox Plate
Australia's premier weight-for-age race, the Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) in October, "will have a dramatic facelift this year, with Moonee Valley Racing Club adopting a plan to provide all expenses paid trips for selected international horses & their connections" reported The Herald-Sun. An announcement about the plan "is expected as early as today" & the MVRC "will follow a model adopted in Dubai, Hong Kong & Singapore, where the host club selects the horses & picks up the bill". Dual Cox Plate winner So You Think (currently in training with Aidan O'Brien in Ireland) "tops the club's wish list of horses" & "no limit will be put on the number of international horses to be invited". The invitation offer "would include the MVRC covering all costs associated with transporting horses to Melbourne, as well as travel & accommodation expenses for the connections"; the likely cost "will be $100,000-$120,000 for each horse". The club "will pursue horses after Cox Plate nominations close in early August" & "has engaged the International Racing Bureau to act as its agent to promote the Cox Plate overseas & secure runners".
