Monday, 28th February 2011

In South Africa, former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a group success (& led in an Australian-bred quinella) when Australian-bred daughter Igugu (Galileo-Zarinia, by Intikhab) scored a 4-lengths victory in the R500,000 (A$75,000) Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas (1600m) for 3YO fillies at Turffontein. Igugu (ridden by Anthony Delpech for trainer Mike De Kock) defeated fellow Australian-bred Hollywoodboulevard (Street Cry-Soneria, by Filante) & UK-bred Welwitschia (Oasis Dream-Maid For Romance, by Pursuit Of Love). Igugu (a $65,000 yearling at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale) now boasts 4 wins (also including 2010's Gr3 Johannesburg Spring Challenge over 1450m at Turffontein) & 2 runners-up (including 2010's Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth) from 6 starts for R955,625 (A$142,000) earnings.
