US Gr1-Winning Sire Manzotti Dies Aged 28
US Gr1-winning pensioned stallion Manzotti (Nijinsky II-Shufleur, by Tom Rolfe) "was found dead in a field at Brookshire Farm" in Texas aged 28, reported bloodhorse.com. On the track, Virginia-bred Manzotti set a track record in the 1988 Gr1 John Campbell Handicap at Pimlico & also won that year's Gr3 Canterbury Cup Handicap & Gr3 Trenton Handicap. Manzotti subsequently stood at stud at Brazos Thoroughbred Farm in Texas & at William Farish's farm near Hempstead in Texas. Manzotti's best runner (among 16 stakes-winners) was Two Altazano, who won the 1994 Gr1 Coaching Club American Oaks, Gr2 Fantasy Stakes & Gr2 Monmouth Oaks. Descendants from Manzotti's graded stakes-placed dam Shufleur "also include 2004 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Spain", while Manzotti's 2nd-dam "is a full-sister to 2-time champion distaffer Shuvee".
