Thursday, 21st April 2011

US Gr1 Kentucky Derby-winning 13-year-old stallion Monarchos (Maria's Mon-Regal Band, by Dixieland Band) "is recovering from colic surgery to straighten multiple twists of the small intestine" performed at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Kentucky, reported bloodhorse.com. Monarchos (who stands at Nuckols Farm in Kentucky) "is expected to recover & begin servicing mares again in 3-4 weeks. In 2001 Monarchos ran the 2nd-fastest Kentucky Derby in history (1min 59.97sec) to join Secretariat as the only winners to cover the 10 furlongs in less than 2 minutes. Monarchos (who also ran 3rd in that season's Gr1 Belmont Stakes) has subsequently sired 13 stakes-winners (including Informed Decision, who won the 2009 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint).
