Stand To Gain Wins Gr1 Sydney Cup

Wednesday, 27th April 2011

On the Australian track over the combined Easter-Anzac Day holidays, multiple Gr1-winning former Coolmore shuttler Hawk Wing (Woodman-La Lorgnette, by Val De L'Orne) added a Gr1 triumph (& 11th individual stakes-winner world-wide) when imported Irish-bred 5YO gelding Stand To Gain (Hawk Wing-Plum Fairy, by Sadler's Wells) scored a 1-length victory in the $500,000 Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on a rain-soaked heavy track at Royal Randwick in Sydney. Stand To Gain (ridden by Rod Quinn for trainer Chris Waller) defeated 4YO mare Older Than Time (Don Eduardo-Up The Hill, by Danehill) & front-running 6YO gelding Solid Billing (Rock Of Gibraltar-A Star Affair, by Star Way). Waller purchased Stand To Gain for 105,000 guineas (A$168,000) as a then 3YO colt at the 2009 UK Tattersalls October Horses-In-Training Sale. Overall he now boasts 5 wins & 6 placings (including March's Listed Manion Cup over 2400m at Rosehill) from 22 starts for $526,469 earnings.
