Monday, 2nd May 2011

In Singapore yesterday, triple Gr1-winning WA Oakland Park Stud-based sire Viscount (Quest For Fame-Antwerp, by Sir Tristram) added a Gr1 triumph when front-running Australian-bred 5YO gelding & Singapore's highest-rated galloper Rocket Man (Viscount-Macrosa, by McGinty) scored a 5-lengths victory in the S$500,000 (A$400,000) weight-for-age Gr1 Lion City Cup (1200m) at Kranji to take this race for the 3rd successive year. Despite being eased downed dramatically toward the end of the race, Rocket Man (ridden by Barend Vorster for trainer Patrick Shaw) still stopped the clock in a blistering 1min 8.85sec to defeat fellow Australian-bred 4YO gelding Better Be The One (More Than Ready-Common Smytzer, by Snippets) & another Australian-bred 5YO gelding Ghozi (Catbird-Finito Fling, by Luskin Star). Rocket Man (a $60,000 yearling consigned by Tyreel Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions National Sale on the Gold Coast) took his record to 15 wins (also including March's Gr1 Dubai Golden Shaheen over 1200m at Meydan, plus 2010's Singapore Gr1 Lion City Cup over 1200m at Kranji, Hong Kong Gr2 Jockey Club Sprint over 1200m at Sha Tin, Singapore Gr3 Garden City Trophy over 1200m at Kranji & Gr3 Woodlands Handicap over 1200m at Kranji, as well as 2009's Gr1 Lion City Cup over 1200m, Gr3 Kranji Sprint over 1200m & Gr3 Singapore 3YO Sprint over 1200m, in addition to 2008's Gr3 Magic Millions Orchid Trophy over 1200m) & 4 runners-up (including 2010's Hong Kong Gr1 International Sprint over 1200m at Sha Tin, Singapore's Gr1 KrisFlyer International Sprint over 1200m at Kranji & the UAE Gr1 Dubai Golden Shaheen over 1200m at Meydan, plus 2009's Singapore Gr1 KrisFlyer International Sprint over 1200m at Kranji) from 19 starts for A$4,388,576 earnings.
