Italian Racing Industry To Strike On Friday
Meanwhile workers "in all sectors of the racing industry will take strike action on Friday to protest at the serious problems being endured by Italian racing" reported racingpost.com. The strike "is expected to prevent any racing taking place in Italy on Friday, 24 hours before the country's showpiece event, the Derby Italiano at Capannelle in Rome". A Trade Union spokesman commented: "There have been 3 hearings in Parliament about the financial state of the racing industry, but UNIRE (Italian racing's independent governing body) seems unable to make any progress & the 2011 budget just does not exist. As a result, the racecourses are unable to guarantee any negotiation with employees, because they do not know how much money they have. Until the new minister Saverio Romano appoints the next secretary-general of UNIRE, there is no solution possible; but at the moment everyone still seems to be on Easter holiday."
