Warrnambool Fiasco: Only 2 Finish Grand Annual Steeple
A "sensational Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool" yesterday turned into a fiasco when a riderless horse "jumped a 2-metre fence & landed among a group of spectators", while 2 horses fell, 2 horses were brought down & a further 2 horses dislodged their riders, leaving "only 2 horses to finish as the race turned into a war of attrition" reported The Herald-Sun. Racing Victoria confirmed last night: "Seven people were taken to Warrnambool Hospital. Four have since been discharged with minor bruising. A 2YO girl has suffered a fractured collarbone. An 80-year-old woman is undergoing x-rays on her shoulder & hip, while a 12-year-old girl is undergoing x-rays on her foot." RV chief executive Rob Hines noted: "Our primary concern is for the well-being of those people that were injured in this freak accident. As part of Racing Victoria's risk management program, ambulances & paramedics were on hand to provide immediate assistance & transfer those requiring further attention to Warrnambool Base Hospital. A full investigation of the incident will be conducted by Racing Victoria, in conjunction with the Warrnambool Racing Club."
