Monday, 9th May 2011

Team Valor International's home-bred colt Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux-Dalicia, by Acatenango) came from well back in running to motor home down the centre of the track & score a 2.75-lengths victory in the US$2 million Gr1 Kentucky Derby (10 furlongs) for 3YOs under the historic Twin Spires at Churchill Downs & before an all-time record crowd of 164,858 fans (the previous mark was 163,628 at the centennial running in 1974). Animal World (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Graham Motion) defeated fellow colts Nehro (Mineshaft-The Administrator, by Afleet) & Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno-Ponche de Leona, by Ponche). Animal Kingdom (a US$100,000 yearling at the 2009 Keeneland September Sale) took his record to 3 wins (also including March's Gr3 Vinery Spiral Stakes over 9 furlongs at Turfway Park) & 2 runners-up from 5 starts for US$1,738,700 earnings; in winning the Derby at just his 5th start, Animal Kingdom is the most lightly raced winner since Exterminator in 1918. And trainer Graham Motion's main Derby hope Toby's Corner was withdrawn from the field last Tuesday with an injury.
