US Sire Monarchos Back At Nuckols Farm

Tuesday, 10th May 2011

US Gr1 Kentucky Derby-winning 13-year-old stallion Monarchos (Maria's Mon-Regal Band, by Dixieland Band) has returned to Nuckols Farm after successful colic surgery "to straighten multiple twists of the small intestine" performed at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Kentucky. Monarchos is expected to begin servicing mares again in 3-4 weeks. In 2001 Monarchos ran the 2nd-fastest Kentucky Derby in history (1min 59.97sec) to join Secretariat as the only winners to cover the 10 furlongs in less than 2 minutes. Monarchos (who also won that season's Gr1 Florida Derby & finished 2nd in the Gr1 Wood Memorial & 3rd in the Gr1 Belmont Stakes before retiring with earnings of US$1,720,830) has subsequently sired 13 stakes-winners (including Informed Decision, who won the 2009 Gr1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint).
