Apapane Wins Japan Gr1 Victoria Mile

In Japan yesterday, last season's Champion 3YO Filly (& 2009 Champion 2YO Filly Apapane (King Kamehameha-Salty Bid, by Salt Lake) just pipped last year's Horse-Of-The-Year & Champion Older Female (& previously Champion 2YO filly in 2008 & Champion 3YO filly in 2009) Buena Vista (Special Week-Biwa Heidi, by Caerleon) in a thrilling 3-way photo-finish to the ¥188.2 million (A$2.2m) Gr1 Victoria Mile (1600m) for mares 4YO & up Tokyo. Now 4YO mare Apapane (ridden by Masayoshi Ebina for trainer Sakae Kunieda) scored by a neck from multiple Gr1-winning 6YO mare Buena Vista (who won this race last year) with a further neck to fellow 4YO mare Lady Alba Rosa (King Kamehameha-One For Rose, by Tejano Run). Apapane now boasts 7 wins (also including 2010's Gr1 Shuka Sho over 2000m at Kyoto, Gr1 Oka Sho-Japanese 1000 Guineas over 1600m at Hanshin & Gr1 Yushun Himba-Japanese Oaks over 2400m at Tokyo, plus 2009's Listed Hanshin Juvenile Fillies over 1600m at Hanshin, as well as placings in both 2010's Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup over 2200m at Kyoto & Listed Tulip Sho over 1600m at Hanshin) from 12 starts for ¥526,028,000 (A$6.155m) earnings.
