Thursday, 19th May 2011

In Europe, the Irish National Stud “suffered a major blow with the death of Verglas, following an accident in his stable” reported racingpost.com. Former West Australian Alwyn Park Stud shuttler Verglas (Highest Honor-Rahaam, by Secreto) was aged 17 & stood this season for €10,000 (A$14,000). Verglas originally stood at France’s Haras de Haie Neuve, but after good results from his 1st crops he was added to the Irish National Stud roster in 2005; his star progeny include French Gr1-winners Silver Frost & Stormy River (among 24 individual stakes-winners world-wide). He covered 154 mares in 2010, 154 in 2009 & 149 in 2008. His UK Gr3-winning son Glass Harmonium is due to run in Australia’s Gr1 Doomben Cup this weekend.
