Gitano Hernando Trainer Ponders Melb Cup

Tuesday, 24th May 2011

South African trainer Herman Brown, whose globe-trotting UK-bred 5YO entire Gitano Hernando (Hernando-Gino's Spirits, by Perugino) won Sunday's Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) at Kranji, confirmed this year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m at Flemington on Tuesday 1 November) is a "possible" target. Gitano Hernando is owned by Chechnya's President Ramzan Kadyrov (who purchased the horse in a bid to win March's Gr1 Dubai World Cup, where he finished 6th) & Brown confirmed: "We've had him for 2 months only & we've been getting to know him better & better. He needs a bit of a break now, so he'll go back to England for a couple of months & we'll make a decision on where we will go from there. He's a possibility of going to Melbourne for the Cup later in the year, but that is still a long way off." Gitano Hernando currently boasts 7 wins (also including 2010's Irish Listed Diamond Stakes over 10.5 furlongs at Dundalk & UK Listed Winter Derby Trial Stakes over 10 furlongs at Lingfield Park, plus 2009's US Gr1 Goodwood Stakes over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita) & 3 placings (including March's UAE Gr2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 over 2000m at Meydan & 2009's UK Gr3 Dee Stakes over 10.5 furlongs at Chester) from 16 starts.
