Multiple Gr1-Winning UK Sire Mtoto Dies Aged 28

In England overnight, 5-time Gr1-winning stallion Mtoto (Busted-Amazer, by Mincio) died at his long-standing home Aston Upthorpe Stud in Oxfordshire aged 28. On the track Mtoto (trained by Alec Stewart for Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid al Maktoum) notched 8 wins from 17 starts, including victories in the UK Gr1 Eclipse Stakes twice, Gr1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes twice & Gr1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, plus runner-up in France’s Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Rated 134 by Timeform, he was crowned European Champion Older Horse in 1987. Mtoto retired to Aston Upthorpe Stud in 1989 & his subsequent star offspring included Gr1 English Derby winner Shaamit & UK Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup winner Celeric; most recently he produced UK G1 Cheveley Park Stakes & Canadian Gr1 Neartic Stakes winner Serious Attitude from his penultimate crop. Mtoto's legacy will continue through his daughters, 16 of which have bred stakes-winners.
