Magic Millions Weanlings Day-1: $220k Stratum Filly

Thursday, 26th May 2011

New Zealand's Whakanui Stud paid top price of $220,000 for a filly by Gr1 Golden Slipper-winning Widden Stud stallion & last year's Australian Champion 1st-Season Sire Stratum (the 7th live foal out of regally-related & top-producing Nureyev mare Great Notice) during yesterday’s opening session of the 3-day weanling section (followed by 3 days of broodmares, 3 days of yearlings & 1 day or racehorses) at the Magic Millions National Sale on the Queensland Gold Coast. The filly (consigned by Reavill Farm) is a half-sister to this season’s Australian-bred dual NZ Gr1-winning 2YO filly Anabandana (Anabaa-Great Notice) who boasts 4 wins (including April’s Gr1 The Oaks Stud Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes over 1400m, March's Gr1 Auckland Diamond Stakes over 1200m, February's Gr2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes over 1200m & January's Gr3 Eclipse Stakes over 1200m) & 2 placings (including 2010's Listed Wentwood Grange Stakes over 1100m) from 6 starts. Whakanui's Tim Bodle enthused: “She's a beautiful filly. She had the looks as well as a great pedigree. She's closely related to 2 exceptional fillies (Anabandana & King's Rose) in New Zealand - both those fillies will be racing in Australia in the Spring & hopefully some nice Australian form will come through for them. We will retain the filly to race & then eventually she will join our broodmare band - she won't be going through the sales as a yearling.” Her dam Great Notice has also produced stakes-winning juvenile Gybe & 3 other winners.
