Gr1 Star Melito 1st Breeding With Encosta De Lago

Friday, 27th May 2011

Reavill Farm's David Rippon confirmed recently-retired dual Gr1-winning & triple Gr2-winning (plus 7-times Gr1-placed) 4YO mare Melito (Redoute's Choice-Cloister, by Marauding) will be covered in her 1st season at stud by dual Australian Champion Sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way). Rippon noted: "Obviously there were a number of factors to consider, but as commercial breeders, it was important for us to choose a stallion with broad commercial appeal. Encosta de Lago has established himself as a champion sire in Australia, but his appeal extends far beyond that, having consistently sired horses of the highest calibre in a number of jurisdictions including Asia & South Africa. Of course we also believe Encosta has the necessary physical attributes to compliment those of Melito & that too was a fundamental consideration." Melito (a $600,000 yearling consigned by Reavill Farm at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) recorded 5 wins (in February's Gr2 Apollo Stakes over 1400m at Rosehill, plus both 2010's Gr1 Winter Stakes over 1400m at Eagle Farm & Gr1 T.J.Smith Stakes over 1200m at Randwick, as well as 2009's Gr2 Furious Stakes over 1400m at Randwick & Gr2 Silver Slipper Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill) & 13 placings (including April's Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill & March's Gr1 Coolmore Classic over 1500m at Rosehill, plus 2010's Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m at Eagle Farm, Gr1 Doomben 10,000 over 1350m at Doomben, Gr1 BTC Cup 1200m at Doomben, Gr1 All Aged Stakes over 1400m at Randwick & Gr3 Birthday Card Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill, as well as 2009's Gr1 Thousand Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield, Gr2 Wakeful Stakes over 2000m at Flemington, Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill, Gr2 Perfect Vision Ilasik Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill, Gr3 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200m at Randwick & Listed Widden Stakes over 1100m at Randwick) from 26 starts (16 at Gr1 level) for $1,934,950 earnings.
