Shamardal Not Shuttling: "Needs 6-Months Off"
Darley announced European champion 4-time Gr1-winning 9YO shuttler Shamardal (Giant's Causeway-Helsinki, by Machiavellian) who had been listed to stand at its Kelvinside stud for $88,000 this year (up 33.3% on 2010) will not be coming to Australia for the upcoming breeding season. Darley nominations manager Alistair Pulford confirmed Shamardal will remain in Europe after vets advised he needed 6-months off to fully recover from an injury sustained in Australia last year & noted: "He had surgery late last year & then covered a full book of mares in the UK. But veterinary advice indicates the horse needs a good break to complete his rehabilitation & the horse's long-term future is always our main concern. He was our most popular horse when fees were announced, so it's disappointing not to have him coming; however the 6-months off is in his best interest & we look forward to him returning to Australia in the future." Just last weekend Shamardal's Australian-bred 3YO son Gingerbread Man (Shamardal-Quaffle, by Hurricane Sky) completed the Singapore 3YO Triple Crown with victory in the Gr1 Singapore Guineas (1600m) at Kranji; Gingerbread Man (also last season's Singapore Champion 2YO) boasts 8 wins & 2 runners-up from 11 starts.
