Murrihy Slams Jockeys Altering Safety Vests

Tuesday, 31st May 2011

Racing NSW's chief steward Ray Murrihy “is aghast at what is taking place on the jockey front: senior riders & apprentices are gambling with their lives,” reported The Sydney Morning Herald. Murrihy declared: “It’s foolhardiness in the extreme & it must be contagious in the jockeys' room. It has come to an epidemic stage.” Murrihy was speaking about safety vests (made mandatory several years ago) & noted: “It is getting to the stage where I'll have to put an extension on my Druitt Street offices to fit all the confiscated vests in. I'd hate to say how many offences we've detected. I'd say 20 or more in the last couple of weeks. It is mainly to do with trying to manipulate weight.” Jockeys have been removing foam from the tailpiece of the safety vest & Murrihy emphasised: “It is a very serious offence. We must remain vigilant. It is foolishness in the extreme to be tampering with a vest in any way.”
