Waterhouse "Empty Boxes" Trigger Staff Lay-Off

Tuesday, 31st May 2011

Gai Waterhouse has “up to 30 boxes empty” at her Randwick stables “causing Sydney's highest-profile trainer to lay off staff” reported The Sydney Morning Herald. Waterhouse confirmed: “I don't have Darley or the Chicken Kings (Ingham family) to fall back on. I'm an independent trainer & have to make the decisions that are right for my stable & business. I had to re-look at the stable & be realistic. It's hard times at the moment. I have had to put off a couple of staff & my numbers are down.” Waterhouse (who has prepared 75 city winners with 2 months of the season remaining) noted: “You have to be financially responsible & if that means cutting back, it means cutting back. I still have the 4 stables (at Randwick) but I'm doing things smarter. It is a case of picking the horses that will make it to the next level & developing them. It is a new challenge.”
