1st Stakes-Winner For Freshman Shuttler Amadeus Wolf

Monday, 5th September 2011

Gr1-winning & triple Gr1-placed 8YO freshman stallion & Chatswood Stud shuttler Amadeus Wolf (Mozart-Rachelle, by Mark Of Esteem) recorded his 1st stakes-winner when Irish-bred colt Caledonian Spring (Amadeus Wolf-Mathuna, by Tagula) scored a 3-length victory in the £21,500 (A$32,000) UK Listed Ascendant Stakes (8 furlongs) for 2YOs at Haydock Park. Caledonian Spring (ridden by Eddie Ahern for trainer Paul D’Arcy) defeated fellow Irish-bred colt Crius (Heliostatic-Fearless Flyer, by Brave Act) & US-bred colt Leqqaa (Street Cry-Guerre Et Paix, by Soviet Star). Caledonian Spirit was a €20,000 (A$27,000) yearling at Ireland’s 2010 Goffs September Sale & later a £50,000 (A$75,000) 2YO at this year’s Goffs Kempton March Breeze-up Sale. Overall he now has 2 wins & a placing from 6 starts for £22,516 (A$34,000) earnings. His sire Amadeus Wolf (from the only crop sired by outstanding sprinter Mozart & whose dam Rachelle is a winning half-sister to Gr1 Oaks d'Italia runner-up Rose Violet) stands at the Irish National Stud. On the track, he won both 2005's UK Gr1 Middle Park Stakes (6 furlongs) at Newmarket & UK Gr2 Gimcrack Stakes (6 furlongs) at York, plus finishing runner-up in the UK Gr2 Coventry Stakes (6 furlongs) at York to end the year as joint 3rd-highest-rated 2YO in Europe. In 2006 he added Gr1-placings in France's Gr1 Prix Maurice De Gheest (1300m) at Deauville, UK Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes (5 furlongs) at York & UK Gr1 Sprint Cup (6 furlongs) at Haydock Park. And in 2007 he won the UK Gr2 Duke Of York Stakes (6 furlongs) at York. He has produced 13 individual 1st-crop winners so far this year.
