Tas Star Conquering Dies On Track At Elwick

Tuesday, 13th September 2011

Tasmania’s 6-times stakes-winning veteran 9YO gelding Conquering (Dangerous-Currently, by Acidity) dramatically collapsed & died in front of the grandstand after finishing last (carrying 66.5kg) in the Members Sprint Handicap (1100m) at Elwick in Hobart. Conquering was making his 1st start following a 7-month spell after winning February’s Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) at Hobart to take that race for the 2nd time (having also won in 2009, as well as finishing runner-up last year). Trainer Charlie Goggin told The Hobart Mercury: “He was special because we bred him & raced him. When you go to the races, the last thing you expect is for this to happen.” In the 2008-09 season, Conquering set a record for the most number of weight-for-age wins in a season with 5 in succession & was named Tasmania’s Horse-Of-The-Year for the 2nd time. Overall Conquering recorded 23 wins (also including 2009's Listed Tattersalls George Adams Plate over 1600m at Launceston, Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m at Hobart & Listed Tote.com.au Stakes over 1200m at Launceston, plus 2008's Listed D'Urban Stakes over 1700m at Caulfield & Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes over 1600m at Mowbray) & 22 placings (including January’s Listed Premium Stakes over 1200m at Launceston, plus 2010's Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes over 1600m at Hobart, Listed Seymour Cup over 1600m at Seymour & Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m at Hobart, as well as 2008's Gr2 Jayco Crystal Mile over 1600m at Moonee Valley, in addition to 2006's Listed Tattersall's George Adams Plate over 1600m at Mowbray & Listed Tasmanian Guineas over 1600m at Mowbray) from 80 starts for $909,795 earnings.
