79 Acceptors For Melbourne Cup

Wednesday, 5th October 2011

The high profile Australian-trained gallopers among yesterday’s 79 acceptors for the Melbourne Cup include Sunday’s Gr1 Turnbull Stakes winner December Draw (Mark Kavanagh) & runner-up Glass Harmonium (Mike Moroney), 2010 Gr1 Caulfield Cup winner Descarado (Gai Waterhouse) & multiple Gr1-winner My Kingdom Of Fife (Chris Waller). The New Zealanders include co-favourite Lion Tamer (winner of last year’s Gr1 Victoria Derby at Flemington) & Bart Cummings has 4 horses still in contention (including last year’s 8th-placed Precedence & German import Illo). Major owner Lloyd Williams & his private trainer Robert Hickmott have kept 6 horses in the Cup (but did not pay up for 2009 Irish St Leger winner Alandi, who has failed to fire in 5 Australian starts since then). With sidelined stars Maluckyday, Littorio, Harris Tweed & Scarlett Lady all withdrawn as expected, the only notable omissions were Western Australia’s Playing God & Peter Moody’s former New Zealand mare King’s Rose (who were both only paid up for the Cox Plate).
