King Mufhasa Wins Gr1 Toorak Handicap

Rich Hill Thoroughbreds stallion Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook, by Mill Reef) added a Gr1 triumph when multiple Gr1-winning 7YO gelding & former NZ Horse-Of-The-Year plus dual Champion Sprinter Mufhasa (Pentire-Shella Cheval, by Mi Preferido) gained the judge’s decision in a 3-way photo-finish to the $350,000 Gr1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield. Top-weighted King Mufhasa (ridden by Michael Rodd for trainer Stephen McKee) scored by a long-neck from favoured 4YO mare King’s Rose (Redoute's Choice-Nureyev's Girl, by Nureyev) with a further half-head to 6YO gelding Luen Yat Forever (Honours List-Loisset, by Langfuhr). King Mufhasa (a NZ$50,000 yearling consigned by Rich Hill at the 2006 NZ Bloodstock Select Sale) took his record to 16 wins (also including 2010’s Gr1 Otaki-Maori Weight-For-Age Classic over 1600m at Otaki, plus 2009’s Gr1 Waikato Draught Sprint over 1400m at Te Rapa & Gr1 Telegraph Handicap over 1200m at Trentham, as well as 2008's Gr2 Coupland's Bakeries Mile in course record time over 1600m at Riccarton Park & Listed Kelt Memorial Stakes over 1400m at Hastings) & 9 placings (including September’s Gr1 Windsor Park Plate over 1600m at Hastings, plus 2010’s Gr1 Waikato Draught Sprint over 1400m at Te Rapa, Australian Gr1 George Ryder Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill & Australian Listed Glasshouse Handicap over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast, as well as 2009’s Gr1 Mudgway Partsworld Stakes over 1400m at Hastings & Australian Gr1 George Ryder Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill) from 45 starts for $2,085,406 earnings.
