Gr1-Winner Master O'Reilly Retired Again

Tuesday, 11th October 2011

Meanwhile trainer Judy Mawer confirmed to Racing Victoria stewards that evergreen 9YO gelding Master O'Reilly (O'Reilly-Without Remorse, by Bakharoff) has been retired for the 2nd time, following his last placing behind Shewan in the field of 15 runners in Saturday’s Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield. Master O’Reilly was previously retired after contesting his 4th successive Gr1 Melbourne Cup last November, but returned to the track after a 43-weeks break in the Gr2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 3rd & finished 11th of the 14 runners; he then finished 12th of the 14 runners in the Gr1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 17, prior to the weekend’s disappointment. Overall Master O’Reilly (a NZ$75,000 2YO at the 2004 NZ Bloodstock South Island Sale) recorded 8 wins (including the 2007 Gr1 Caulfield Cup & 2007 Gr2 Winning Edge Presentations Stakes) & 9 placings (including the 2007 Listed JRA Cup, 2008 Gr1 Turnbull Stakes, 2009 Gr2 Sandown Classic & 2009 Gr2 Makybe Diva Stakes) from 48 starts for $2,985,400 earnings. Master O’Reilly contested 3 successive Gr1 Caulfield Cups (won in 2007, 7th in 2008 & 6th in 2009) before being withdrawn with a bout of colic in the lead-up to last year’s renewal; he also ran in 4 successive Melbourne Cups (8th in 2007, 4th in 2008, 4th in 2009 & 15th last year).
