Dettori Says New UK Whip Rules "Very Hard To Follow"
Godolphin’s star jockey Frankie Dettori grabbed British headlines overnight with the declaration that the new UK whip rules (which took effect Monday) “are extremely difficult to follow in the heat of racing” reported racingpost.com. Dettori declared: “It's very, very, very hard to count the number of whips. I was trying to train myself to just get to 4, but you're going at 40mph, you're looking for racing room, for gaps, so it is a lot to get used to. It will take time.” Noting the rule change “reflected growing concern from within racing that the appearance of horses being whipped - regardless of whether it actually causes pain - was alienating non-racegoers from the sport” Dettori emphasised: “We have this perception among people who know nothing about horse racing that we are out there abusing horses. Actually our horses are looked after better than humans. We have a whip made of foam which actually doesn't hurt horses; it's to guide them & encourage them to run a little faster.”
