Umatilla Dies At Blue Gum Farm Aged 23
In Australia, Blue Gum Farm's Gr1-winning stallion Umatilla (Miswaki-Dancing Show, by Nijinsky) died peacefully in his paddock yesterday morning aged 23. Umatilla (conceived in Kentucky to southern hemisphere time) was born in New Zealand in 1988; his dam Dancing Show had been covered by Mr Prospector sire Miswaki & exported in-foal to NZ. Dancing Show was subsequently exported to Australia with Umatilla as a foal-at-foot. Umatilla was purchased as a yearling at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale by American owner/breeder Bill DuPont & trained by Tommy Hughes senior. The colt raced 12 times as a 2YO (in 3 different States) & won or placed on 11 occasions (his only miss was in the Gr1 Golden Slipper). Umatilla trained on to be a leading sprinter as a 3YO & 4YO & retired boasting 7 wins (including the Gr1 Karrakatta Plate, Gr3 Hilton on The Park Stakes & Listed SAJC Da Costa Plate) & 16 placings (including the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes, Gr1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Gr1 Newmarket Handicap, Gr1 Lightning Stakes, Gr2 Pago Pago Stakes, Gr2 West End Breeders’ Stakes, Gr3 Stanley Wootton Stakes & Gr3 Rubiton Stakes) from 38 starts for $683,305 earnings. Umatilla began breeding duties in 1993 & has sired 34 individual stakes-winners (6 Gr1 winners: dual Toorak Handicap winner Umrum, Sydney Cup winner Streak, Adelaide Cup winner Bohemiath, Emirates Stakes winner Valedictum, Karrakatta Plate winner Umah & recent Stradbroke Handicap plus George Main Stakes winner Sincero) for over $36 million progeny earnings. Umatilla was pensioned from active stud duties in 2009.
