UK Tatts Yearlings Book-2 Day-2: $429k Exceed And Excel Colt
In the UK auction ring overnight, Hong Kong Jockey Club representative Mark Richards out-bid agent Charlie Gordon-Watson to pay top price of 260,000 guineas (A$429,000) for a colt by former Australian champion 1st-season sire Exceed And Excel (out of Bahri mare Temple Of Thebes) during the closing session of the 3-day Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2. The colt (consigned from Lofts Hall Stud) had been bought “in-utero” by Anthony & Victoria Pakenham when they purchased his dam Temple Of Thebes for 80,000 guineas (A$132,000). The colt is a 3/4-brother to Royal Ascot-winning juvenile Flashmans Papers & Richards declared: “At the beginning of the week, this was the one I said that we should have. I did not want to go home without him. He should be an ideal type for Hong Kong; plenty of speed with some quality - he's got a huge backside already! Exceed And Excel has had good performers in Hong Kong & is doing well in both hemispheres - it was a no-brainer really.” Overall the Hong Kong Jockey Club team has purchased 5 lots in total at Tattersalls Books 1 & 2 for 800,000 guineas (A$1.32m).
